隋开皇十六年（597）析高平县置陵川县，属长平郡①。唐初隶盖州，贞观初盖州改为泽州，隶泽州。天宝元年泽州改为高平郡，隶高平郡②。宋仍隶泽州③。金天会六年泽州称南泽州，隶南泽州，天德三年泽州复去“南”字，仍隶泽州④。元至元三年（1266），省入晋城⑤。治今陵川县城⑥。

中陵川县，“本汉泫氏县。北齐省之。隋开皇十六年置陵川县，属泽州。唐武德元年属盖州，贞观元年来属。中下沁水县二汉晋皆属河内郡元魏置廣宁郡北齐郡废改县为永宁隋开皇十八年复为沁水属澤州唐武德元年属蓋州貞觀元年來属。

泽州，下。唐初为泽州，后为高平郡，又仍为泽州。宋属河东道。金为平阳府。元初置司候司及领晋城、高平、阳城、沁水、端氏、陵川六县。至元三年，省司候司、陵川县入晋城，省端氏入沁水。
