唐武德三年（620年），析丹川县置晋城县，先后隶盖州、建州和泽州。唐天祐二年（905年）更名丹川县①。治所在今晋城市②。

泽州上  隋长平郡。“武德元年，改为盖州，领高平、丹川、陵川，又置盖城四县。又于濩泽县置泽州，领濩泽、沁水、端氏三县。三年，于今理置晋城县。” 
晋城，“汉高都县，隋改为丹川。武德元年，移丹川于源泽水北，属盖州。二年，于古高都城置晋城县，属建州。六年，废建州，县属盖州。……贞观元年，废盖州，县属泽州。”

《新唐书》卷三十九《志》第二十九?地理三
泽州高平郡，上。“晋城，上。本丹川，武德元年置建州。三年析丹川置晋城以隶之。六年州废，隶盖州，徙盖州来治。九年省丹川、盖城入晋城。贞观元年州废，以晋城、高平、陵川来属。天祐二年更曰丹川县。南有天井关，一名太行关。”

《舆地广记》卷十八?河东路上?上泽州
紧晋城县，“本高都县。二汉晋属上党郡。元魏置建州，北齐置长平、高都二县。后周并为高平郡。隋开皇初郡废，十八年改县为丹川。大业初置长平郡，唐武德元年置建州，三年析丹川县置晋城，六年州废隶盖州，徙盖州来治。九年省丹川入晋城。贞观元年州废隶泽州来治。”
《唐会要》卷七十?河东道
“泽州。……晋城县。武德三年置建州。并置晋城县。六年。州废来属。天祐二年十一月。改为丹川高都县。

晋城，“汉曰高都县，隋曰丹川。”
《大清一统志》卷一百七一?泽州府 
凤台县：唐武徳三年于县置建州析置晋城县属之。六年移盖州治晋城，九年省丹川入晋城。贞观元年不泽州治。天祐三年更曰丹川。
   高都故城，“在凤台县东北。汉置高都县，属上党郡。……后周为長平郡治。隋开皇初，郡废为泽州治，十八年改为丹川县，大业初为长平郡治。……旧志，故城在州東北三十里，丹水北高都村，即唐初所移丹川县也。按《水经注》有高都故城，是后魏高都，非即汉县治，唐于古高都城置晋城县，亦后魏高都非汉高都。”
按：《大清一统志》云：晋城县“天祐三年更曰丹川。”疑误。",
