金兴定四年（1220年），乐平县升为臬州，属太原府。治所乐平，即今昔阳县城①。蒙古窝阔台汉六年（1234年）复更名乐平县②。

《金史》卷一百十《列传》第五十六?郭文振
文振治辽州，深得众心。兴定三年，迁遥授中都副留守，权元帅左都监，行河东北路元帅府事，刺史、从宜如故。文振招降太原东山二百余村，迁老幼于山寨，得壮士七千，分驻营栅，防护秋获。文振奏：“若秋高无兵，直取太原，河东可复。”优诏许之。十月，权元帅右都监、行元帅府事，与张开合坚、台州兵复取太原。四年，诏升乐平县为皋州，寿阳县西张寨为晋州，从文振之请也。

乐平县，“州东南六十里。……宋乾德初，伐北汉取之，升为平晋军，旋复故，改属平定军。金兴定四年，升为皋州。”

雍正《山西通志》卷五《沿革三》?平定州
乐平县，“金仍隶平定州。兴定四年正月升为臯州，寻废州，隶平定州”。
按：臬州废止年代史志只言元初。蒙古窝阔台汗六年（1234年），元灭金，蒙军占领山西全境，故确定该年为臬州废止年代。",
