北宋太平兴国四年（979年），平晋军复更名为乐平县，属平定军①。仍治今昔阳县城。金大定二年（1162年），属平定州。兴定四年（1220年），升为臬州②。

《金史》卷一百十《列传》第五十六?郭文振
文振治辽州，深得众心。兴定三年，迁遥授中都副留守，权元帅左都监，行河东北路元帅府事，刺史、从宜如故。文振招降太原东山二百余村，迁老幼于山寨，得壮士七千，分驻营栅，防护秋获。文振奏：“若秋高无兵，直取太原，河东可复。”优诏许之。十月，权元帅右都监、行元帅府事，与张开合坚、台州兵复取太原。四年，诏升乐平县为皋州，寿阳县西张寨为晋州，从文振之请也。
