清雍正三年（1725年），改宁化所为宁武县，为宁武府治。治所即今宁武县城。1912年，废宁武府，县属山西省。

宁武府城县依郭。筑于成化二年。初为关城，巡抚都御史李侃请于古宁军口置关设都指挥，领军守备，乃以是年丁亥三月始事。明年四月城圪，以总兵镇之，遂为镇城。……国朝置府城，因其旧宁武营在焉。",
