清雍正三年（1725年），改阳高卫为阳高县，属大同府①。治所在今阳高县城。1912年，废大同府，阳高县属山西省。

乾隆《大同府志》卷一《沿革》明县废，置阳和卫，徙高山卫合之，属行都指挥使司。《明史?地理志》：阳和卫，元白登县，洪武初县废，二十六年置卫，宣德元年徙高山卫来同治，北有雁门山，雁门水出焉，南有桑干河。……国朝顺治三年并为阳高卫（此阳高得名之始），五年移大同府来治，升为阳和府，八年府还治大同，仍为阳高卫。雍正三年改为阳高县（此阳高置县之始），隶大同府。（大同市方志办整理重印P37，2007年。）",
