北周保定二年（562）置，属蔚州灵丘郡①，治今大同市灵丘县南，具体治地不可考。隋开皇三年（583年）省入灵丘县②。

①《隋书》卷三十《志》第二五?地理中 雁门郡，统县五。灵丘，“后魏置灵丘灵丘郡，后齐省莎泉县入焉。后周置蔚州，又立大昌县。开皇初郡废，县并入焉。”。（中华书局P852，1973年）
