金贞祐二月（1214年）五月置，属西京路，领浑源一县，治今浑源县城①。元至元二十五年（1288年）属大同路，不领县②。明、清属大同府③。民国元年（1912年）废。

《大清一统志》卷一百九?大同府?古迹浑源州，“金贞祐二年于县置浑源州。元至元四年省浑源县入州，属大同路。”
②《元史》卷五十八《志》第十?地理一大同路，上。“唐为北恒州，又为云州，又改云中郡。辽为西京大同府。金改总管府。元初置警巡院。至元二十五年，改西京为大同路”。领司一、县五、州八。州领四县。浑源州。下。唐为浑源县，隶应州。金升为州，仍置县在郭下，并置司候司。元至元四年，省入州。（中华书局P1375～1377，1976年。）

《清史稿》卷六十《志》三十五?地理七?山西大同府：“初因明制，领州四，县七。雍正中，增阳高、天镇，改朔及马邑隶朔平，蔚及黄昌分隶直隶宣化、易州”。领州二，县七。浑源州，“难。府东南百二十里。顺治十六年，安东中、前二所省”。（中华书局P2037，1977年。）",
