北宋政和六年（1116）晋州升为平阳府。治所在今临汾市。领县十：临汾，洪洞，襄陵，神山，赵城，汾西，霍邑，冀氏，岳阳，和川①。金因之②。金大定七年（1167年），割部分地域析置乡宁县，属耿州，辖区缩小。元太祖十三年（1218年）改为平阳路③。

“晋宁路， 上。 唐晋州。金为平阳府。元初为平阳路，大德九年，以地震改晋宁路。”

按：据《元史?地理志》载：“元初为平阳路”，又载：“元太祖十三年，立太原路总督府”。《元史?太祖纪》云：“十三年，木华黎自西京入河东，克太原、平阳”，可见平阳路与太原路应同年而置，皆在元太祖十三年（1218年）。

平阳府（1116-1259年）界线

其时平阳府辖境相当于今天临汾、襄汾、洪洞、汾西、古县、霍州、安泽等市县，北界即今霍州老张湾乡①。南界即今翼城县辛安乡东北的南朱村②。东界即今安泽县良马乡③。西界即今襄汾县浪泉乡西北的井头村④。
注：
①北界：光绪《山西通志》卷二?府州厅县图下?霍州本州岛：北有“老张湾”村。（中华书局P344，1990年）1995年山西省地图集山西省地图集霍州有“老张湾”乡，当是。
