隋大业初（607年）改晋州为临汾郡，领县七：临汾、襄陵、冀氏、杨、霍邑、汾西、岳阳。治所在今临汾市，义宁初（617年）改为平阳郡①②。

“后周置总管府，隋开皇初府罢，大业初州废改郡，为临汾郡，义宁初曰平阳郡，唐武徳元年改为晋州。”
 
临汾郡（605~616年）界线

其时临汾郡辖境相当于今天临汾、襄汾、洪洞、汾西、霍州、古县等市县，以及安泽县南部，北界即今霍州老张湾乡①。南界即今翼城县辛安乡东北的南朱村②。东界即今安泽县良马乡③。西界即今襄汾县浪泉乡西北的井头村④。
