唐天宝元年（742年），改泽州为高平郡，仍治晋城。领晋城、端氏、陵川、阳城、沁水、高平等六县。乾元元年（758年），高平郡复更名为泽州。

《明一统志》卷二十一?泽州：
唐初“又置泽州治端氏县。贞观初废盖州而以泽州治晋城。天宝初改为高平郡。乾元初复为泽州。” 
《读史方舆纪要》四十三?山西五
泽州，“唐初复置建州，又为盖州，贞观初改置泽州，天宝初曰高平郡。乾元初复为泽州。”

界线

其时高平郡的辖境大致相当于今晋城市。高平郡的东界即今山西省与河南省省界之靳庄村①。南界即今晋城市泽州县与河南省交界线上的碗城村②。西界即今晋城市西与运城市交界线上的舜王坪峰③。北界即今晋城市高平市与长治市长子县交界线上的南张店村④。
注：
①东界：光绪《山西通志》巻二《府州厅县图上》?陵川县：东有 “靳庄”。（中华书局第212页，1990年。）1995年《山西省地图集》晋城市陵川县东有“靳庄村”，当是。
②南界：成化《山西通志》卷二《疆域》?泽州：“南抵河南怀庆府河内县碗子城。”（中华书局第38页，1998年。）1995年《山西省地图集》晋城市泽州县南有“碗城村”，当是。
按：1914年改凤台县为晋城县，1983年晋城县改设县级市，1985 年改为地级市，分为城、郊两区，1996年改郊区为泽州县。
③西界：光绪《山西通志》巻二五《府州厅县考三》沁水县：“县境，西南至绛州垣曲县界舜王坪一百里。”（中华书局第2269页，1990年。）1995年《山西省地图集》晋城市西与运城市交界线上亦有“舜王坪”峰。
④北界：光绪《山西通志》巻二五《府州厅县考三》高平县：“县境，北至潞安府长子县界张店村四十五里。”（中华书局第2259页，1990年。）1995年《山西省地图集》高平市北，长子县南界有“南张店”村，当是。",
