洪武九年（1376年）汾州直隶山西承宣布政使司，孝义、平遥、介休3县改隶汾州直隶州，辖区缩小①。明万历二十三年（1595），改汾州为汾州府。治所在今汾阳市①。领汾阳、孝义、平遥、介休、石楼、临县、宁乡、永宁七州县。

太原府元冀宁路，属河东山西道宣慰司。洪武元年十二月改为太原府，领州五，县二十：阳曲、太原、榆次、太谷、祁、徐沟、清源、交城、文水、寿阳、盂、静乐、河曲。

忻州，县一：定襄。
代州，洪，领县三：五台、繁峙、崞。
岢岚州，领县二：岚、兴。
