唐乾元元年（758年）改魏郡置。⑴治贵乡县（在今河北大名县驻地东北旧府城西北三十里）。大历七年（772年）割顿丘、清丰、观城、临黄四县置澶州，⑵辖境缩小。辖贵乡、元城、魏、馆陶、冠氏、莘、朝城、昌乐等县。
