唐武德四年（621年）改武阳郡置。⑴治贵乡县（在今河北大名县驻地东北旧府城西北三十里）。领贵乡、昌乐、元城、莘、武阳、临黄、观城、顿丘、繁水、魏、冠氏、馆陶、漳阴等县。同年，析顿丘、观城二县置澶州，析莘、临黄、武阳三县置莘州，析冠氏、馆陶置毛州，辖境缩小，仅领贵乡、昌乐、繁水、漳阴、元城、魏等六县。贞观元年（627年），省漳阴县；废莘、毛、澶三州，所领各县仍来属，辖境扩大。
