后周显德六年（959年）置。⑴治归义县（今河北雄县驻地雄州镇）。⑵北宋辖归信、容城2县。⑶金朝，保定县来隶，辖境扩大。⑷

⑴《五代会要》卷20：“周显德六年五月，以瓦桥关为雄州，割容城、归义二县隶之。……地望并为中州，时初平关南故也。”（上海古籍出版社，1978年，第331页）
《寰宇记》卷67：雄州“本涿州归义县之瓦子济桥，在涿州南易州东，当九河之末，旧置瓦桥关。周显德六年收复三关，以其地控扼幽蓟，建为雄州，仍移归义并易州之容城二县于城中。领县二：归义，容城。”
