西汉武帝元朔三年（前126年）封刘昌为武始侯。⑴治所在今河北邯郸市西南60里处。⑵武始侯三十四年，即征和元年（前92年）封为赵王，⑶侯国仍为县。

⑵嘉庆《清一统志》卷33：“武始故城，在邯鄲縣西南。戰國時，韓地。《史記》：秦昭襄王十三年，向壽伐韓，取武始，即此。漢置武始縣，屬魏郡。元朔三年，封趙敬肅王子昌為侯邑。後漢建武五年，更封張純為武始侯，而《郡國志》無此縣，盖尋省也。蕭徳言《括地志》：故城在邯鄲縣西南五十里。”
