战国时期中山国置，秦沿置。⑴治所在今河北定州市南邢邑镇。⑵属恒山郡。西汉先后属中山国、郡，新莽时改名北陉县。⑶

⑴《韩非子》卷15：“李兊治中山，苦陘令上計而入多。李兊曰：語言辨聴之説不度於義，謂之窕言；無山林澤谷之利而入多者，謂之窕貨。君子不聴窕言，不受窕貨，子姑免矣。”（《四库全书》电子版）
《水经注》卷11：“《魏书?地形志》：肆州永安郡驴夷县有思阳城，盖因水以得名。故魏昌城下引《水经》云：李克书曰：魏文侯时，克为中山相，苦陉之吏上计而入多其前，克曰：苦陉上无山原林麓之饶，下无溪谷牛马之息，而入多其前，是苦吾百姓。遂执而免之。”（《水经注校释》，杭州大学出版社，第217页）

⑵《元和郡县图志》卷18：“陉邑县……本七国时中山国之苦陉邑，汉苦陉县也。……汉属中山国，章帝改为汉昌，魏文帝改为魏昌。髙齐省，隋开皇十六年改置隋昌县，属定州。武徳四年，改曰唐昌，天宝元年改曰陉邑。”（中华书局，第511页）
《明一统志》卷3：“苦陉城，在无极县东北二十八里。战国魏李克为中山相，苦陉之吏上计而入多其前，克执而免之。汉为县，属中山，章帝改曰汉昌。”
嘉庆《清一统志》卷28：“陉邑故城，在无极县东北。本七国时中山国之苦陉邑，后属赵。汉置苦陉县，属中山国。后汉初封杜茂为侯邑。章帝北巡，改曰汉昌。魏文帝改曰魏昌。晋及后魏因之。髙齐省。隋开皇十六年，改置隋昌县，属定州。武徳四年，改曰唐昌。天宝元年，改曰陉邑。宋初省入无极。《元和志》：陉邑县，北至定州五十里。《寰宇记》：魏昌故城，在无极县东北二十八里。《通典》又有中山故城，在唐昌县东北。旧《志》：慕容垂都中山，即此。”（第10册）
《河北省志》第2卷《建置志》：“治今定州市南邢邑镇。”（河北人民出版社，第18页）
按：今《河北省地图集》（1981年版）定县幅，在定县南有“邢邑”，方位、里距与传统说法相符，且邢、陉音近，当是。

按：据《汉书》卷99中《王莽传中》：天凤元年（14年），“郡县以亭为名者三百六十，以应符命文也”。又曰：郡有内郡、近郡、边郡，“合百二十有五郡。九州之内，县二千二百有三”。（12册，4136—4137页）据此，姑作县在新莽天凤元年（14年）改名。",
