唐武德四年（621年）改颍川复为长社，许州治，天宝元年（742年）为颍川郡治，乾元元年（758年）复为许州治（1）。宋元丰三年（1080年）属颍昌府治（2）。金仍属许州（3），元同（4），明洪武元年（1368年）省入许州（5）。治今河南许昌市（6）。
