北魏太和二十二年（498年）置，鲁阳郡治（1）。约北周天和二年（567年）改为鲁山县（2）。治今河南鲁山（3）。

（1）《魏书》卷106《地形志中》：鲁阳郡，太和十一年置镇，十八年改为荆州，二十二年罢，置。（北京，中华书局，1974年，7册，2544页）《元和郡县志》卷6《河南道二》：汝州鲁山县，后魏太和十一年孝文帝南巡，置鲁阳镇，十八年改镇荆州，二十二年改鲁阳县为北山县，周改为鲁山县。（北京，中华书局，1983年，上册，166页）县名、置年从《元和志》。
（2）《元和郡县志》卷6《河南道二》：汝州鲁山县，后魏太和二十二年改鲁阳县为北山县，周改为鲁山县。《周书》卷5《武帝纪》天和二年（567年）省东南诸州。（北京，中华书局，1971年，1册，74页）姑作此年改。
（3）正德《汝州志》卷2《古迹》：鲁山县，鲁阳城，在县治南，古鲁县，汉为鲁阳县。大古城，在县治城外西北，乃旧县城也，兴废之由无考。（上海古籍书店，《天一阁藏明代方志选刊》，46册）《清嘉庆一统志》卷225《汝州二?古迹》：鲁阳故城，今鲁山县治。（《四部丛刊续编》81册，商务印书馆，1934年）《中国文物地图集?河南分册》：文物单位简解，鲁山县，小古城遗址，县城西关西南，商、周。故子城遗址，县城北火车站附近，西周、战国。鲁阳故城，县城南关一带，东周。现地表城墙遗迹不存。（北京，中国地图出版社，1991年，90页）历史上城在附近移动，即今河南鲁山。",
