约秦始王十七年（前230年）置，属颍川郡，汉高帝五年（前202年）属韩国，六年（前201年）仍属颍川郡（1），天凤元年（14年）属左队郡，更始元年（23年）复旧（2）。东汉建武二年（26年）为侯国（3）。治今河南叶县（4）。

（2）《汉书》卷99中《王莽传中》：天凤元年，分三辅为六尉部，河东、河内、弘农、河南、颍川、南阳为六队郡；官名悉改，以亭为名者三百六十，以应符命文，九州之内，县二千二百有三。（12册，4136~7页）今作此年改，王莽败亡复旧。
