    南朝宋元嘉二十五年（448年）置，属弋阳郡，大明中属光城左郡，八年（464年）复属弋阳郡，后复属光城左郡（1）。北魏西边城郡治（2）。约北齐天保七年（556年）省（3）。治今河南固始东南桂岗一带（4）。

（1）《宋书》卷36《州郡志二》：边城左郡太守，文帝元嘉二十五年，以豫部蛮民立茹由、乐安、光城、雩娄、史水等七县，属弋阳郡。光城左郡太守，大明八年，省光城左郡为县，属弋阳，疑是大明中分弋阳所立，八年复省，后复立。史水。（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册，1080页）
