北齐武平元年（570年）省北弋阳入南弋阳并改为定城，弋阳郡治，北周同。隋开皇三年（583年）属光州，大业三年（607年）属弋阳郡（1）。唐武德三年（620年）弦州治，贞观元年（627年）废弦州，属光州，太极元年（712年）光州治，天宝元年（742年）弋阳郡治，乾元元年（758年）复为光州治（2）。宋同（3），绍兴二十八年（1158年）蒋州治，三十一年（1161年）复为光州治（4）。元至元十二年（1275年）入元，仍为光州治（5）。明洪武元年（1368年）省县入州（6）。治今河南潢川（7）。
