约秦始皇二十六年（前221年）置，属三川郡，汉高帝二年（前205）属河南郡，，新莽天凤元年（14年）属保忠信卿，更始元年（23）复属河南郡（1）。东汉建武十五年（39）属河南尹（2），西晋泰始二年（266年）属荥阳郡（3）。北魏太平真君八年年（447年）省（4）。治今河南原阳西圈城（5）。
