秦惠王更元13年（前312），在陕西安康市汉江北岸中渡台设西城县，为汉中郡治所。汉因之。（1）建安二十年（215），属西城郡。（2）景元四年（263），蜀国灭亡，属魏兴郡。（3）晋属梁州魏兴郡。（4）刘宋为魏兴太守属县。（5）齐属梁州魏兴郡。（6）北周天和四年（569），西城县并入吉安县。（7）

《汉书》卷28上地理志8上：“汉中郡，秦置。莽曰新成。属益州。……县十二：西城，旬阳，北山，南郑，褒中，房陵，安阳，成固，沔阳，锡、莽曰锡治，武陵，上庸，长利。”（中华书局，1962年，第1596页）。
