隋开皇十八年（598）西都县改为湟水县，属鄯州，治所在今青海乐都县。①
隋大业三年（607）改属西平郡。②
唐武德二年（619），改属鄯州。唐贞观中638年，改属鄯州下都督府。
唐天宝元年（742），改属西平郡。
唐乾元元年（758），复属鄯州。
唐上元二年（761）九月，为吐蕃所陷，县废。③
