隋开皇19年（599）置鸣沙县，属环州，治所在今宁夏中宁县东鸣沙州。① 
隋大业3年（607），改属灵武郡。
唐武德2年（619），改属西会州。
唐贞观6年（632），废西会州，复属环州。
唐贞观9年（635），改属灵州都督府。
唐神龙元年（705），移治今宁夏青铜峡县西南黄河东岸丰安县故城。② 

注：
① 《中国历史地名辞典》：“鸣沙县，隋开皇十九年（599年）置，治所即今宁夏中宁县东鸣沙州。唐神龙元年（705年），移治今宁夏青铜峡县西南黄河东岸丰安县故城，大中三年（849年）仍治旧址，元升为鸣沙州。”（南昌：江西教育出版社，1988年，第493页。）
② 《旧唐书》卷38《地理》一：“鸣沙，隋县。武德二年，置西会州，以县属焉。贞观六年，废西会州，置环州。九年，废环州，县属灵州。神龙二年，移治废丰安城。”（北京：中华书局，1975年，第1416页。）又据周振鹤：《地方行政制度志》：“武德初年改隋郡为州，又为政治军事需要而大量权置州县，并以数州合置一总管府以统军戎；七年，改总管府为都督府。”（上海：上海人民出版社，1998年，第103页。），故唐贞观9年（635），当改属灵州都督府。",
