隋大业二年（606年），改鸣沙县为敦煌县，为瓜州治。①治所在今敦煌市西党河西岸的汉唐沙州故城遗址处。②
隋大业三年（607年），复为敦煌郡治。③
唐武德二年（619年），为瓜州治。④
唐武德五年（622年），为西沙州治。唐贞观七年（633年），复为沙州治。天宝元年（742年），为敦煌郡治。乾元元年（758年），为沙州治所。治所在今敦煌市东南25公里三危山。⑤
唐建中二年（781年），陷于吐蕃。⑥
