北周孝闵帝元年（557年），并敦煌、鸣沙、平康、效谷、东乡、龙勒六县为鸣沙县，属敦煌郡。①治所在今敦煌市西党河西岸的汉唐沙州故城遗址处。②
隋大业二年（606年），改鸣沙县为敦煌县，为瓜州治。③
