隋大业元年（605 年）置华亭县，属安定郡①，义宁二年（618 年）属陇东郡。唐武德元年（618 年）改属陇州②。垂拱二年（686 年），改为亭川县。治所在今甘肃华亭县。
①《元和郡县图志》卷2《关内道2?陇州》华亭县条：“本秦泾阳县地。大业元年置华亭县，以在华亭川口故名”，中华书局1983 年版，第46 页。《读史方舆纪要》卷58《陕西7》平凉府华亭县条：“汉右扶风汧县地。后魏普泰二年立华亭镇，以扼蕃戎。隋大业初置县，属安定郡。义宁二年，分置陇州于此。唐改属陇州。垂拱二年，改为亭川县。神龙初复故，大历八年置义宁军于此。九年，吐蕃入寇，凤翔节度李抱玉破之于义宁是也。元和三年省县入汧源。贞元三年，吐蕃大掠汧阳、吴山、华亭，即故城也。五代唐又改置义州。后周显德中，复置华亭县为州治。宋改为仪州。熙宁五年州废，以县属渭州。金属平凉府。”中华书局2005 年版，第2783 页。
