宋建隆三年（962 年）置大潭县，属秦州。熙宁六年（1073 年）属岷州。元初（以蒙古灭金1234 年）省大潭入岷州①。治所在今礼县南八十里②。
①《明一统志》卷37 岷州卫军民指挥使司条：“祐川废县，在卫境。本西魏溢乐县地。后周置基城县。唐改曰祐川，后没于吐蕃。宋崇宁中复置岷州治此。元省”。四库全书本。《舆地广记》卷15《陕西秦凤路上》岷州大潭县：“大潭县，汉冀县地，属天水郡。皇朝建隆三年以良恭、大潭二镇置大潭县，属秦州。熈宁六年来属”，四川大学出版社2003 年版，第437 页。
