明弘治十年（1497年）十一月分房县地置，属郧阳府。（1）治所即今湖北省保康县。（2）清不改。（3）1912年裁府留县后，属湖北省。（4）

（1）《明史》卷44《地理志五•湖广》郧阳府保康县：“弘治十年（1497年）十一月以房县之潭头坪置。”（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册1085页）而顾祖禹《读史方舆纪要》卷79《湖广五•郧阳府》保康县：“本房县地，宏治十一年，析县之宜阳等乡置。”（北京，中华书局，1955年，4册，3408页）与之不同。
