南宋端平三年（1236年）迁置。为归州治。治所在今湖北秭归县东南、长江南岸旧州河。（1）蒙古至元十四年（1277年）改为归州路治，元至元十六年（1279年）又为归州治。
（2）明洪武元年（1368年）迁治丹阳城。（3）

（1）《宋史》卷86《地理志四•荆湖北路》归州：“端平三年（1236年）徙郡治于南浦。”治秭归县。（北京，中华书局，1977年，7册，2196页）《元史》卷63《地理志六•湖广等处行中书省》归州：“宋端平三年（1236年），元兵至江北，遂迁郡治于江南曲沱，次新滩，又次白沙南浦，今州治是也。”（北京，中华书局，1976年，5册，1527页）据秭归县地名领导小组《湖北省秭归县地名志》谓：“旧州河。古时，归州故城在该村后坡上……村地处长江边，故名。”（1982年9月，218页）今湖北秭归县东南、长江南岸有旧州河。（《湖北省地图册》，湖北省测绘局，1990年，127——128页）当是。按：曲沱、新滩，时间短，不予表示。
（2）《元史》卷63《地理志六•湖广等处行中书省》归州：德祐初归附。元至元“十四年（1277年），改归州路总管府。十六年，降为州。”治秭归县。（北京，中华书局，1976年，5册，1527页）按：当蒙古至元十四年（1277年）改为归州路治，元至元十六年（1279年）又为归州治。
（3）《明史》卷44《地理志五•湖广》荆州府归州：“旧治江北，后治白沙南浦。洪武初，徙治丹阳。”（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册1082页）按：故作明洪武元年（1368年）迁治丹阳城。",
