清雍正十三年（1735年）置。为宜昌府治。（1）治所即今湖北省宜昌市。（2）1912年改名宜昌县。（3）

（1）《清史稿》卷67《地理志十四•湖北》宜昌府：“顺治初，沿明制，为夷陵州。雍正十三年（1735年）升为府，更名，属湖北布政司，置东湖县为治。”又在所治东湖县下曰：“旧为夷陵县。明省入夷陵州。雍正十三年（1735年）复置，更名。”（北京，中华书局，1977年，8册2180、2181页）
