元至元十三年（1276年）迁置。为峡州治。治所即今湖北宜昌市。至元十七年（1280年）为峡州路治。（1）至正二十四年（1364年）属峡州。明洪武九年（1376年）四月省入夷陵州。（2）

（1）《元史》卷59《地理志二•河南江北等处行中书省》峡州路：本峡州。“元至元十三年归附，十七年（1280年）升为峡州路。”又在所治夷陵县下曰：“归附后，复归江北旧治。”（北京，中华书局，1976年，5册，1418页）按：本治步阐垒。当作元至元十三年（1276年）迁归步阐垒。据顾祖禹《读史方舆纪要》卷79《湖广四•荆州府》彝陵州夷陵废县：“步阐垒，即今治也。”（北京，中华书局，1955年，4册，3255页）牛汉平《明代政区沿革综表•湖广省总表》，荆州府夷陵州（后为夷陵县），即今湖北宜昌市。（北京，中国地图出版社，1997年，134页）按：当即治今湖北宜昌市。
