唐武德四年（621年）析当阳县置。属平州。（1）治所在今湖北当阳市西北界清溪场东沮水东岸。（2）六年（623年）省入当阳县。（3）

（1）《旧唐书》卷39《地理志二•山南东道》荆州当阳：“武德四年（621年），于县置平州，领当阳、临沮二县。”（北京，中华书局，1975年，5册，1553页）《新唐书》卷40《地理志四•山南道》江陵府当阳县：“武德四年置平州，并析置临沮县。”（北京，中华书局，1975年，4册，1028页）按：当作唐武德四年（621年）析当阳县置，属平州。
（2）《水经•沮水注》：“沮水南迳临沮县西，青溪水注之。”杨守敬按：“汉县属南郡，后汉因，魏属襄阳郡，晋因，宋、齐、梁复属南郡。在今当阳县西北。”（《水经注疏》，南京，江苏古籍出版社，1989年，下册，2697页）《太平寰宇记》卷146《山南东道五•荆门军》当阳县：“临沮侯国，今县北有故城。”卷147《山南东道六•峡州》远安县清溪：“在县南六十五里。”（金陵书局，光绪八年刊本，26册，19、7页）又清《嘉庆一统志》卷352《荆门直隶州•古迹》临沮故城：“在当阳县西北。”《山川》清溪：“在远安县西南鬼谷洞东，一作清溪。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，130册，10、8页）清光绪二十七年《湖北舆地图》之《远安县舆图》在县南界有鬼谷洞，其东南有清溪入沮水。相当今当阳市西北界清溪场东。（《湖北省地图册》，湖北省测绘局，1990年，123——124页）按：姑作县治在今湖北当阳市西北界清溪场东沮水东岸。
（3）《旧唐书》卷39《地理志二•山南东道》荆州当阳：武德六年（623年），“又省临沮入当阳。”（北京，中华书局，1975年，5册，1553页）而《新唐书》卷40《地理志四•山南道》江陵府当阳县：武德六年曰玉州，八年（625年）州废，“省临沮，以当阳来属。”（北京，中华书局，1975年，4册，1028页）与之不同。",
