元至元二十八年（1291年）和州路降为州，属庐州路。①故治即今安徽和县治。②明洪武元年（1368年）改和州为历阳县。③
①《元史》卷59《地理志二》：“和州……元至元十三年，置镇守万户府。明年，改立安抚司。又明年升和州路。二十八年降为州，隶庐州路。……领县三：历阳，倚郭。含山、乌江。”（第5册，1411页）
②《清嘉庆一统志》第44册，卷131《和州直隶州古迹》：“历阳故城，今州治。”
③《明史》卷40《地理志一》：“和州，元治历阳县，属庐州路。洪武初省州入县。二年九月复改县为州，仍属庐州府。七年属凤阳府。寻直隶京师。……东北有乌江县，洪武初省。……领县一：……含山。”（第4册，931页）洪武初省州为县，当作元年（1368年）。《明太祖实录》卷45洪武二年九月乙巳：“复以历阳县为和州。时历阳乔县陈善言，历阳旧为和州，今以为县，隶庐州，公务期会遥远不便。诏从之。仍以历阳为和州，隶中书省。”《明一统志》卷17和州：“本朝初省历阳、乌江二县入和州。洪武二年又改为历阳县仍隶庐州。寻复为和州。直隶京师。”（上册，266页）《明统志》误以为省县入州，实为降州为县。",
