元至元十四年（1277年）置，属淮安府（1）。治今江苏泗阳县西南城厢（旧泗阳）（2）。明洪武元年（1368年）改为桃源县（3）。
注：
（1）《元史》卷59《地理志二》：淮安府，“至元十四年，改立总管府，领山阳、盐城、淮安、淮阴、新城、桃园七县。”（北京，中华书局，1976年，5册，1415页）县即于至元十四年置。
（2）《读史方舆纪要》卷22《江南四》：淮安府桃源县，“本宿迁县之桃园镇，金兴定初置淮滨县，寻废，元复置桃园县，属淮安路，后讹园为源。”（北京，中华书局，1955年，2册，1037页）按明清桃园县，即今泗阳县西南城厢（旧泗阳，《江苏省地图集》，江苏省地图集编辑组，1978年，51页）。
