秦始皇二十四年（公元前223年）置（1）。治今江苏扬州市区内西北蜀冈（2）。属东海郡（3）。西汉高帝六年（公元前291年）为东阳郡治，景帝三年（公元前154年）为江都国治，元狩二年（公元前121年）为广陵郡治，元狩六年（公元前117年）为广陵国治，五凤四年（公元前54年）为广陵郡治，初元二年（公元前47年）为广陵国治（4）。王莽天凤元年（14年）改为安定县（5）。
注：
（1）《史记》卷7《项羽本纪》：秦二世元年（公元前209年），“广陵人召平于是为陈王徇广陵。”（北京，中华书局，1959年，1册，298页）是秦代已置广陵县。《史记》卷6《始皇本纪》：二十三年（公元前224年），击荆，取陈以南至平舆，虏荆王，荆将项燕反于淮南，二十四年（公元前223年），”王煎、蒙武攻荆，破荆军，昌平君死，项燕自杀。”（同上引书，1册，234页）广陵县当是秦始皇二十四年灭楚后置。一记战国楚怀王十年（公元前319年）置。《史记》卷15《六国年表》：楚怀王十年，“城广陵。”（同上引书，2册，731页）或以谓此时置。
（2）《舆地纪胜》卷37《淮南东路·扬州·景物上》引《元和郡县志》云：广陵，“在江都县北四里州城直上，在陵上。”（北京，中华书局影印本，1992年，2册，1567页）清嘉庆《扬州府志》卷15《城池志》：“广陵有城，在蜀冈上。”（《中国方志丛书》，台北市，成文出版社有限公司印行，1976年，4册，1页）按“陵上”即“蜀冈”。今在扬州市区内西北蜀冈。
