隋开皇十年（590年）置，属珠崖郡（1）。治所在今海南省琼山县东二十里（2）。唐武德四年（621年），更名颜罗（3）。

（1）《隋书》卷31?珠崖郡：“梁置崖州。统县十：义伦，带郡；感恩；颜庐；毗善；昌化，有藤山；吉安；延德；宁远；澄迈；武德，有扶山。”（北京，中华书局，1973年，3册，885页）。
《舆地纪胜》卷124?广南西路?琼州：“梁置崖州，又于徐文县立珠崖郡，竟不有其地，隋炀帝更开置珠崖郡立十县，又置儋耳、临振二郡（《元和郡县志》在大业六年，《隋志》不载。”昌化军?感恩县：“《元和郡县志》云，本汉九龙县，隋大业六年改名感恩县，取感恩水以为名。国朝《会要》云，熙宁六年废为镇，隶宜伦县，元丰四年复。”（北京，中华书局，1992年，4册，3510、3587页）。作开皇十年置。
（2），《嘉庆一统志》卷452?琼州府?古迹：颜城废县：“在琼山县东二十里。《旧唐书?地理志》，武德四年崖州领颜卢县，贞观元年改曰颜城。《新唐志》，开元后省如舍城。府志，有颜村，在今县东二十里。有卢龙洞，即颜卢故址。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，170册）。
（3），《旧唐书》卷41?岭南道?崖州：“隋珠崖郡。武德四年平萧铣置崖州，领舍城、平昌、澄迈、颜罗、临机五县。贞观元年置都督府，督崖、儋、振三州。其年，改颜罗为颜城，平昌为文昌。（北京，中华书局，1975年，5册，1761页）。",
