宋泰始六年（470年）置，属宋安郡（1）。治所在今广东省连县西北朱冈村（2）。泰豫元年（472年）郡县皆废（3）。

（1），《宋书》卷37?湘州?广兴公相：“吴孙皓甘露元年，分桂阳南部都尉，立为始兴郡。晋武帝平吴，以属广州，成帝度荆州，宋文帝元嘉二十九年又度广州，三十年复度湘州。明帝泰始六年，立冈湲县，割始兴之封阳、阳山、含洭三县，立宋安郡，属湘州。泰豫元年复旧，省冈湲县，改始兴曰广兴。”（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册，1133页）。
（2），《嘉庆一统志》卷455?连州直隶州?古迹?冈溪废县：“在州西北。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，170册）。《读史方舆纪要》同。据《宋书》作冈湲，姑定点于今连县西北朱冈村。
