隋开皇九年（589年）以安远郡改置，属广州南海郡（1）。治所即今广东省南雄县东北大塘镇（2）。开皇十六年（596年）省入始兴县（3）。

（1），《隋书》卷31?地理下?南海郡?始兴县：“齐曰正阶，梁改名焉，又置安远郡，置东衡州。平陈，改郡置大庾县，又于此置广州总管。开皇磨移向南海，又十六年废大庾入焉。”（北京，中华书局，1973年，3册，881页）。
（2），《元和郡县图志》卷34?韶州?始兴县：“安远镇，在县东北一百五十里。”（北京，中华书局，下册，903页）。《嘉庆一统志》卷454?南雄州?古迹?安远废郡：据《隋志》、《元和志》作在县北。（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，170册）。《读史方舆纪要》谓大庾废县在南雄府北大庾岭上。据以上资料，大庾县故址当在明清南雄府境内的大庾岭下、距始兴县城约一百五十里。宣统元年《广东地舆全图》南雄州图，州东北大庾岭下有地名：古城村。（台湾，成文出版社《中国方志丛书》第108号）。古城村，符合以上条件，今为南雄县大塘镇。疑此古城村即大庾县故城遗址。
