宋绍兴六年（1136年）复置，属琼州，十三年（1143年）复置吉阳军，县为军治（1）。治所即今海南省崖县西崖城镇（2）。元因之（3）。明洪武元年（1368年）改为崖州治，正统四年（1439年）省入崖州（4）。

（1），《宋史》卷90?地理六?广南西路?吉阳军：“本朱崖军，即崖州。熙宁六年废为军。绍兴六年废军为宁远县。十三年复。后改吉阳军。镇二：临川，藤桥。熙宁六年省宁远、吉阳二县为临川、藤桥二镇。宁远即临川。南渡后，县二：宁远，绍兴六年复县，隶琼州，十三年复来属。吉阳，熙宁六年废为藤桥镇，隶琼州，绍兴六年复。”（北京，中华书局，1977年，7册，2246页）。
（2），《嘉庆一统志》卷452?琼州府?古迹：宁远废县：“在崖州南。隋置宁远县为临振郡治。唐改郡为州。通志，由旧州址，在今州南一里水南村。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，170册）。光绪《琼州府志》卷11?古迹?崖州宁远废县：“隋置，以宁远水名。宋在城内州治西北。明洪武四年知县甘义清欠与州南一里水南村，十年知州刘斌复迁于故址。”清崖州即今崖县西崖城。作临振县、宁远县故址皆治当今崖城镇。
（3），《元史》卷63?地理六?湖广等处行中书省?吉阳军：“唐振州。宋改崖州，又为朱崖军，又改吉阳军。元至元收附后，隶海北海南道宣慰司。领县一：宁远。”（中华书局，1976年，5册，1539页）。
