宋绍兴十三年（1143年）以万宁县更名，为万安军治（1）。治所即今海南省万宁县（2）。元因之（3）。明洪武元年（1368年）十月改万安军为万州，县为州治，正统四年（1439年）省县入州（4）。

（1），《宋史》卷90?地理六?广南西路?万安军：“旧万安州，熙宁七年废为军。绍兴六年废军为县，隶琼州，十三年复为军。”县二：万宁，后复名万安；陵水，熙宁七年为镇，元丰三年复，绍兴六年隶琼州，十三年复来隶。（北京，中华书局，1977年，7册，2246页）。《嘉庆一统志》卷452?琼州府?古迹：万安废县：“在万州北。本汉紫贝县地。唐置万安县为万安州治，宋熙宁时废州为军。通志，唐治通化都在今州北，今名旧州，宋移今治。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，170册）。“宋移今治”，《舆地广记》，金仙水在万宁县北三里，即清万州北金仙河，据此，政和年间万宁县已在清万州，即今万宁县。今作熙宁七年为万安军治时，县即迁于今万宁县。当为绍兴十三年复于万宁县置万安军时，复改万宁县为万安县。
