明洪武元年（1368年）以南宁军更名，属琼州府。领宜伦、昌化二县，治宜伦。治所即今海南省儋县西北中和镇（2）。正统五年省宜伦县入州，领昌化一县。清因之。1912年废州为县。

（1），《明史》45?地理六?广东?琼州府?儋州：“元南宁军，属海北海南道宣慰司。洪武元年十月改为儋州，属府。正统四年六月以州治宜伦县省入”。领县一：“昌化，州南。旧城在东南，今城本昌化守御千户所，洪武二十五年置，正统六年五月徙县治焉。”（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册，1146页）。
（2），《嘉庆一统志》卷452?琼州府?古迹：儋耳故郡：“在儋州西。通志，故州治在今州西三十里高麻都湳滩浦，隋末迁高坡，即今治。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，170册）。唐以后义伦改宜伦又改为儋州，治所未见迁徙，即为清儋州治。据正德《琼台志》儋州图、光绪《广东舆地全图》儋州幅，明清儋州治所即今儋县西北中和镇。",
