元天历二年（1329年）以定安县升州，属乾宁军（1）。治所即今海南省定安县（2）。明洪武元年（1368年）复改为定安县，属琼州（3）。

（1），《元史》卷63?地理六?湖广等处行中书省?乾宁军：“元至元十五隶海北海南道宣慰司。天历二年，以潜邸所幸，改乾宁军民安抚司。领县七：琼山，倚郭；澄迈；临高；文昌；乐会；会同；安定。”（中华书局，1976年，5册，1538页）。
《明史》45?地理六?广东?琼州府：“元乾宁军民安抚司，元统二年十月改为乾宁安抚司，属海北海南道宣慰司。洪武元年十月为琼州府，二年降为州，三年仍升为府。领州三，县十。”定安县“元至元二十九年六月置。天历二年十月升为南建州。洪武元年十月复为县”。（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册，1146页）。
（2），《嘉庆一统志》卷452?琼州府?古迹：定安故城：“在今定安县东南。《明统志》在府城南八十里。治在今县东南南资都新寨岭下。天历二年升南建州，移治琼牙乡，即今治。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，170册）。清定安县即今县。
