五代南汉乾亨元年（917年）迁置，为雷州治（1）。治所即今广东省海康县（2）。宋因之（3）。元至元十五年为雷州路治（4）。明洪武元年为雷州府治，清因之（5）。1912年废府留县（6）。

（1），《太平寰宇记》卷169?雷州?海康县：“隋废（南合）州，置海康县。朱梁开平三年，曾移州于惊雷江源，至刘氏伪命日，却归海康。”（金陵书局，光绪八年刊本，30册）。
（2），自隋设县之后，唯梁开平三年，移县治南兴镇，南汉乾亨元年复迁故治，其余未见迁徙记载，治所即今广东省海康县。
（3），《宋史》卷90?地理六?广南西路?雷州，海康郡：“开宝五年，废徐闻、遂溪二县。”“县一：海康。南渡后，复二县：遂溪，绍兴十九年复置；徐闻，乾道七年复置。”（北京，中华书局，1977年，7册，2244页）。
（4），《元史》卷63?地理六?湖广等处行中书省?广西两江道宣慰使司都元帅府?雷州路：元至元“十七年，即此州为海北海南道宣慰司治所，改安抚司为总管府，隶宣慰司。领县三：海康；徐闻；遂溪。”（中华书局，1976年，5册，1537页）。
（5），《明史》45?地理六?广东?雷州府：“元雷州路，属海北海南道宣慰司。洪武元年为府。领县三：海康，倚；遂溪；徐闻。”（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册，1144页）。
《嘉庆一统志》卷450?雷州府?海康县：“附郭。元为雷州路治，明为雷州府治，本朝因之。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，168册）。
