刘宋永初元年（420年）置，属新宁郡（1）。治所在今广东省阳春县西北圭岗镇（2）。齐建元元年（479年）改名甘泉县（3）。

（1），《宋书》卷38?州郡志四?广州刺史：“新宁太守，晋穆帝永和七年，分苍梧立。”今领县十四：其中“甘东令，《永初郡国》有。何志不注置立。”（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册，1193页）。作永初元年置。
（2），《嘉庆一统志》卷447?肇庆府?古迹?甘东废县：“在阳春县西北。宋置，属新宁郡，齐改名甘泉，隋省。旧志，在甘林水东，故名。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，167册）。今广东省阳春县西北圭岗镇有甘子坑、甘子垌，姑定点于圭岗镇。
（3），《南齐书》卷14?州郡志上?广州?新宁郡：“博林，南兴，临沇，甘泉，新成，威平，单碟，龙潭，成氧，威化，归顺，初兴，抚纳，平乡”。（北京，中华书局，1972年，1册，263页）。作齐建元元年改甘东为甘泉。",
