梁天监元年（502年）置，属新宁郡（1）。治所即今广东省阳春县北坡面村（2）。隋开皇十年（590年）属端州，十八年（598年）改名南流县（3）。

（1），《隋书》卷31?地理下：“信安郡，平陈，置端州。”统县七，有铜陵县：“有流南县，开皇十八年改曰南流，又有西城县，大业初废入。”（北京，中华书局，1973年，3册，883页）。据注（2），作梁天监元年置，属新宁郡。
（2），《嘉庆一统志》卷447?肇庆府?古迹?流南废县：“在阳春县西北。…《寰宇记》西城，隋分甘东县置。旧志，流南县梁置，在县西北三十五里顺阳都；西城县在县西七十里太平都。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，167册）。宣统元年《广东地舆全图》阳春县图：县北有顺阳都，都西有兰坡村，在今阳春县坡面镇西北，姑据此定流南县于坡面镇坡面村。（台湾，成文出版社《中国方志丛书》第108号）。
