唐武德四年（621年）分新兴县置，属新州（1）。治所即今广东省县浮云县东南城头村（2）。天宝元年属新兴郡，乾元元年属新州（3）。宋开宝五年（972年）废（4）。

（1），《唐书》卷43上?地理7：“新州新兴郡，本新昌郡，武德四年以端州之新兴置。县二：新兴，武德四年析置索卢、新昌、单碟、永顺四县，后省新昌、单碟，乾元后又省索卢。永顺。”（北京，中华书局，1975年，4册，1098页）。
（2），《太平寰宇记》卷163?新州：“唐武德四年平萧铣复置新州，天宝元年改为新兴郡，乾元元年复为新州。”“废永顺县，在州北四十五里。唐武德四年析新兴县置，皇朝并入新兴。”（金陵书局，光绪八年刊本，29册。）宋新州治所即今新兴县，其北四十五里，相当今浮云县东南城头村。
