梁天监七年（508年）分梁化县置，属始兴郡（1）。治所即今广东省乐昌县西北老坪石（2）。隋开皇十年（590年）属广州；十二年（592年）省入梁化县（3）。

（1），《隋书》卷31?地理下?南海郡?乐昌县：“梁置，曰梁化，又分置平石县。开皇十二年省平石入焉。”（北京，中华书局，1973年，3册，881页）。《舆地纪胜》卷90?广南东路?韶州?乐昌县：“《元和郡县图志》云，本汉曲江县地，梁天监七年，分曲江置梁化县，属始兴郡。开皇十年改属广州。《隋志》云，梁置梁化县，又分梁化县置平石县，开皇十二年省平石县入焉，十八年改名乐昌。《唐志》韶州云，武德四年析广州之乐昌县来隶。”（北京，中华书局，1992年，3册，2886页）。
（2），《嘉庆一统志》卷444?韶州府?古迹：“平石废县，在乐昌县西北。…县志，今县西郭有平石村；又县西北有平石溪，皆以故县得名。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，165册）。宣统元年《广东地舆全图》乐昌县图：县西北武水旁有地名平石街汛（台湾，成文出版社《中国方志丛书》第108号）。当即平石县故址，平石街今名老坪石。
